The short answer

I build websites for registered NZ charities at no cost

I'm James Ian Rowles, a freelance web developer from New Zealand with a Bachelor of Software Engineering. Alongside paid work, I design and build websites for registered New Zealand charities for free. No design fee, no build fee and no monthly fee from me.

Small charities are usually run by volunteers with no budget for a website, and an out-of-date site or a Facebook page alone makes it harder to win donors, volunteers and funding. A clear, quick site that says what you do and how to help fixes that.

I take on a small number of these at a time, alongside paid work, so I can do each one properly. If I can't start yours straight away, I'll tell you when I can.

How it works

01

Email

Tell me your charity's name, its registration number on the Charities Register and what you want the site to do.

02

Plan

You get a short written plan: the pages, what I need from you and when I can start.

03

Build

I build it and send a live preview link as I go, so your board or volunteers can check it.

04

Launch

It goes live on your domain, set up in Google Search Console with a sitemap.

Free websites for New Zealand charities

Looking for paid work instead? See freelance web developer, New Zealand.

Can a New Zealand charity get a website built for free?

Yes. I build websites for registered New Zealand charities at no cost: no design fee, no build fee and no monthly fee from me. The charity owns its domain and accounts.

Who qualifies for a free charity website?

Charities registered on the New Zealand Charities Register. Include your registration number when you email, so I can check it. I take on a small number at a time, so there may be a short wait.

Are there any costs at all?

There's no charge from me. The only costs are ones in the charity's own name, such as registering a domain, if you don't already have one. Where a free or low-cost hosting plan fits, I'll set the site up on it.

What's included in a free charity website?

A few clear pages covering who you are, what you do, how to donate or volunteer and how to get in touch, with an enquiry form, analytics and Google Search Console set up. Online shops, member logins and custom systems are paid projects.

Who owns the website?

The charity does. The domain and accounts are registered to the charity, so you can move the site to someone else at any time without needing me.

Do you build free websites for non-profits that aren't registered charities?

Email me anyway. Registered charities come first, but if you're a small community group or club doing good work, tell me about it.
