ANZAC Day 2027

Sunday 25 April 2027, with the day off on Monday 26 April for most.

ANZAC Day 2027 falls on Sunday 25 April. If you don't normally work Sundays, your public holiday moves to Monday 26 April. Shop trading restrictions still apply on the Sunday morning itself.

What ANZAC Day commemorates

25 April is the anniversary of the first landing of troops from New Zealand, Australia and other allied forces on Gallipoli. Under the Anzac Day Act 1966, the day commemorates everyone who has served New Zealand in war and warlike conflicts, including those who died, and everyone who has died in New Zealand military service.

How Mondayisation works for ANZAC Day

ANZAC Day is fixed to 25 April. When it lands on a weekend, the day you get off depends on whether you'd normally work that day.

  • You'd normally work Sunday: the public holiday stays on Sunday 25 April.
  • You wouldn't normally work Sunday: the public holiday moves to Monday 26 April.

You get one public holiday for ANZAC Day, not two. Waitangi Day 2027 works the same way, moving from Saturday 6 February to Monday 8 February.

Are shops open on ANZAC Day 2027?

ANZAC Day is a restricted trading day until 1pm. Almost all shops must stay closed until 1pm on 25 April, unless they're on the list of exempt shops or in an exemption area. After 1pm they can open.

The restriction follows the calendar date, not the Mondayised day. In 2027 that means shops must stay closed until 1pm on Sunday 25 April. Monday 26 April is a public holiday for many workers, but it isn't a restricted trading day, so shops don't have to close twice.

Working on ANZAC Day

If you work on a public holiday, your employer must pay you at least time and a half. If the holiday falls on a day you'd normally work, you also get an alternative holiday, a paid day off to take later.

ANZAC Day and the school holidays

The Term 1 school holidays in 2027 run from Saturday 10 April to Monday 26 April, so the ANZAC Day Monday is the last day of the break. Term 2 starts on Tuesday 27 April. The full calendar is in our school holidays guide.
