King's Birthday 2027 is Monday 7 June. It's a national public holiday, so anyone who works Monday to Friday gets a three-day weekend from Saturday 5 to Monday 7 June. In 2026 it was Monday 1 June.
Why it's always the first Monday in June
The Holidays Act 2003 lists the birthday of the reigning Sovereign as a public holiday, observed on the first Monday in June. The holiday doesn't move to match the King's actual birthday. It's always a Monday, so it never needs Mondayising.
King's Birthday dates
| Year | King's Birthday |
|---|---|
| 2026 | Monday 1 June |
| 2027 | Monday 7 June |
| 2028 | Monday 5 June |
2027 is one of the latest King's Birthdays possible. The first Monday in June can't fall any later than 7 June.
Two long weekends in June 2027
Matariki falls on Friday 25 June 2027, less than three weeks after King's Birthday. That gives June 2027 two long weekends: 5 to 7 June, then 25 to 27 June. June 2027 has 20 working days once weekends and both holidays are taken out. Our Matariki 2027 guide explains why that date moves every year.
Are shops open on King's Birthday?
King's Birthday isn't one of the restricted shop trading days. Those are Christmas Day, Good Friday, Easter Sunday and ANZAC Day until 1pm. Shops can open, though each business sets its own hours.
Working on King's Birthday
If you work on a public holiday, your employer must pay you at least time and a half. If the holiday falls on a day you'd normally work, you also get an alternative holiday, a paid day off to take later.
King's Birthday and school
King's Birthday 2027 falls in Term 2, which runs from Tuesday 27 April to Friday 2 July 2027. Schools are closed on the day. See our school holidays guide for every term date.
Public holidays before and after King's Birthday
| Holiday | Date |

| King's Birthday | Mon 7 Jun 2027 |

After Matariki there's a long gap with no national public holiday until Labour Day in October. Our Labour Day guide covers how those work, and the ANZAC Day 2027 guide explains the Monday 26 April holiday.
