A year in one go is the cheapest way to pay. For a 751cc-plus bike, four 3-month licences come to $842.48, against $816.45 for 12 months. For a 251–750cc bike it's $632.32 against $606.29.
Why bike rego costs more than a car
Almost all of it is the ACC levy, which pays for injuries on the road. Riders are far more likely to be hurt in a crash than people in cars, so the levy is much higher. A petrol car's rego levy is $56.75 a year before GST. For a motorcycle it's:
| ACC levy, 12 months, excl. GST | Petrol | Non-petrol |
|---|---|---|
| Moped or scooter | $111.93 | $125.36 |
| Motorcycle up to 250cc | $336.70 | $350.13 |
| Motorcycle 251–750cc | $467.18 | $480.61 |
| Motorcycle over 750cc | $649.93 | $663.36 |
$25 of each motorcycle and moped levy goes to motorcycle safety programmes. It's part of the levy, not an extra charge.
Get 25% off the levy with Ride Forever
ACC's Rider Reward takes 25% off the ACC levy part of your rego if you hold a Ride Forever Gold award. It's applied automatically when you relicense, so there's nothing to claim.
On a 251–750cc petrol bike, the levy is $537.26 a year with GST, so 25% off is worth about $134 a year. Over 750cc it's worth about $187.
Electric motorbikes
An electric motorcycle pays $446.96 a year, a little less than a 61–250cc petrol bike. Very light electric vehicles, with a gross mass of 1,000 kg or less, don't pay road user charges, so e-motorbikes and e-mopeds skip RUC.
Putting a bike's rego on hold
If the bike is off the road for winter or a long trip, you can put the rego on hold for 3 to 12 months. There's no fee to do it, and you don't pay the licence while it's on hold. You can't ride it on the road in that time.
WoF for motorbikes
Motorcycles registered on or after 1 January 2000 need a WoF every year, and that isn't changing. Bikes registered before 2000 move from every 6 months to once a year from 1 November 2026. You need a current WoF to renew the rego.
