How much is a WoF in NZ?

What a car warrant of fitness costs at VTNZ, the AA and local garages, what a fail costs you, and how the 2026 rules change the yearly bill.

Short version: a standard car WoF costs $92 at most VTNZ branches and $81 for AA members or $91 for non-members at most AA Auto Centres. Independent garages set their own price, and Canstar's April 2025 survey put the usual range at $70 to $95. NZTA doesn't set a WoF price, so it's worth checking before you drive in.

WhereCar WoF priceNotes
VTNZ$92At most branches. Drive in, no booking at most sites. A digital voucher for one standard car WoF is also $92.
AA Auto Centres, members$81Standard across most AA Auto Centres. $8 more at AA Auto Centre Wanaka.
AA Auto Centres, non-members$91Same sites. Some need a booking; the drive-in AA testing stations don't.
Independent garages and chainsVariesEach sets its own price. Canstar's April 2025 survey found most charged between $70 and $95.

VTNZ and AA prices were read from their own websites in October 2026. Trailer, motorcycle and caravan WoFs are priced separately. VTNZ sells those in branch only, so ask for the price when you arrive.

What a WoF costs over a year

The price per inspection is only half of it. How often you pay depends on when your car was first registered, and that changes from 1 November 2026. (Which cars change, and when.)

CarScheduleYearly cost at $92 (VTNZ)
Registered before 2000, until 31 Oct 2026Every 6 months$184
Registered before 2000, from 1 Nov 2026Annual$92
Registered 2000 to Oct 2019 (until its change date)Annual$92
Registered from 1 Nov 2019, aged 4 to 14, from 1 Nov 2026Every 2 yearsAbout $46 (one $92 WoF every 2 years)

Cars first registered from November 2013 to October 2019 move to two-yearly WoFs from 1 November 2027. Cars aged 14 to 26 stay annual.

What it costs if your car fails

The inspection fee covers the inspection, not the repairs. If the car fails, you get a list of what needs fixing, and you can take it to any mechanic.

  • Recheck at the AA: free if you go back to the same WoF agent within 28 days of the first inspection. After 28 days it's a new inspection and you pay again.
  • Recheck at VTNZ: free at any VTNZ branch if you bring your inspection check sheet within 28 days. If a VTNZ Certified Repairer does the work, they organise the recheck for you.
  • Small fixes on the spot: VTNZ says its technicians can usually replace wiper blades and most bulbs, adjust headlights and top up fluids while you're there. Expect to pay for the parts.
  • Driving a car that's failed: the AA notes you can only drive it on the road to get it repaired and re-inspected, even if the old WoF hasn't expired yet.

Garages outside the AA and VTNZ set their own recheck terms. Ask before you book, especially if you plan to get the repairs done somewhere else.

Cheap ways to avoid paying twice

Most fails are things you can check in the driveway in five minutes. VTNZ's own pre-WoF checklist covers them:

  • Lights: indicators, park lights, brake lights, dipped and high beam. Park facing a window to see them.
  • Wipers and washers: the washers should hit the screen and the blades should clear it without streaks.
  • Tyres: look at the tread-depth indicators and the sidewalls.
  • Seatbelts: no tears or fraying, and every buckle should click and release.
  • Warning lights: from 1 November 2026, inspections also check that no warning light is on for automatic emergency braking or lane keep assist, where the car has them.

Empty the boot too. The inspector needs to see the spare wheel.

The cost of not having one

Driving with a WoF that expired more than two months ago is an infringement. The fee is going up from $200 to $350 under NZTA's changes from 1 November 2026, which is nearly four VTNZ WoFs.

You also can't renew your rego without a current WoF or CoF, and rego is a separate bill: $181.45 a year for a petrol car. See how much rego costs.

Common questions

How much is a WoF in NZ?

$92 at most VTNZ branches, and $81 for AA members or $91 for non-members at most AA Auto Centres (October 2026). Independent garages set their own prices; Canstar's April 2025 survey found most between $70 and $95.

Is a WoF cheaper at the AA or VTNZ?

For AA members, the AA is $11 cheaper ($81 vs $92). For non-members the two are almost the same ($91 vs $92).

Does NZTA set the price of a WoF?

No. Each inspection station or garage sets its own price. NZTA sets the inspection standard, not the fee.

Is the WoF recheck free?

At the AA and VTNZ, yes, within 28 days of the first inspection (VTNZ asks for your check sheet). Other garages set their own terms, so ask first.

How much is a WoF for a motorbike or trailer?

They're priced separately from a car WoF. VTNZ sells trailer, motorcycle and caravan WoFs in branch only, so check the price at the counter or with your local garage.

Will a WoF every 2 years save me money?

If your car was first registered on or after 1 November 2019, yes. From 1 November 2026 you pay for one inspection every two years instead of one a year, which halves the yearly cost.
